The New Jersey Department of Education has released the results of standardized tests administered to third, fourth, eighth and 11th graders in the spring of 2005. All students were tested in language and math. Fourth and eighth graders were also tested in science. Students must achieve proficiency on the 11th grade High School Proficiency Assessment test to graduate high school.
Scores are grouped by partial proficient, proficient and advanced proficient. Partial proficient is considered failing to perform at the minimum level. Proficient and advanced proficient range are considered passing. The state uses the standardized test results as part of its formula to see which schools meet federal No Child Left Behind regulations.
These results are for all students, including special-education students and students with limited English. Only schools with total population results are included here.
Using percentages, the tables show how well students who were tested know the material. It can be inferred that a school with high percentages of test-takers at the advanced and proficient levels is doing a good job of helping students meet or exceed state standards. The federal No Child Left Behind Act mandates that all students score at proficient or above on state achievement tests by 2014.
A school's District Factor Group (DFG) should be taken into consideration when comparing the school's performance with that of other schools. The DFG is a demographic measure created by the state Department of Education that includes income levels in the district and other factors. Schools with a rating of A tend to be in the poorest communities in the state. Those with a J tend to be in the wealthiest neighborhoods. The DFG categories: A, B, CD, DE, FG, GH, I and J. (R signifies a charter school.)
