Kennedy coming to city - and Street's aid

Continuing to emphasize that he is the Democrat in the mayor's race, John F. Street is bringing to the city a nationally known politician whose very name - Kennedy - personifies the Democratic Party.

Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D., Mass.) is to travel with President Clinton to Philadelphia on Friday for an appearance at La Salle University on Street's behalf.

"[Kennedy] knows John Street. They go back, [and] he wants to be helpful," said Street's campaign press secretary, Ken Snyder. "He speaks to the bedrock principles of our party. He's one of the great spokesmen for the principles of our party."

Kennedy spokesman Will Keyser confirmed that the senator planned to join the President on the trip here and to speak at La Salle, presumably before Clinton.

The event, to be held in the Tom Gola Arena, on West Olney Avenue near 20th Street, is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. It will be free and open to the public.

Clinton and Kennedy remain popular among mainstream Democrats, particularly African American voters, whom Street needs to turn out in big numbers on Election Day.

"He's extremely popular," said U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, the city Democratic Party chairman, noting that Kennedy made appearances here for presidential candidate Michael Dukakis in 1988 and Democratic Senate candidate Lynn Yeakel in 1992.

"I think it's a boost," Brady said, adding that he did not think that Kennedy's visit would be lost among the excitement of Clinton's arrival. "[Kennedy] just adds to it. We had a chance to get both of them, so why not?"
