Mayoral hopefuls want more information

The two leading mayoral candidates reacted yesterday to the City Council resolutions calling on the city administration to provide it with information on the pending deals for new stadiums.

John Street, the Democratic candidate, and Republican Sam Katz were asked if Council should act now on stadium issues or should action be left to the next administration in 2000.

"It would be presumptuous for me to tell Council President [Anna] Verna and these members who have to deal with this problem when they should do it," Street said.

"If it can be done one way or another in a fair and reasonable way and if they have the information that's needed, then they probably should go ahead and do it. . .But they shouldn't rush, they shouldn't just do something to be doing something, and that's a judgment that only they can make."

Said Katz: "I want this to be done in the right way with the right consideration of community and neighborhood instrests, with full disclosure to the public of everything that needs to be disclosed so that people know what they're doing and not be pressured by anybody's artificial time frames."
