U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, the city's Democratic chairman, has brokered an alliance between state Sen. Vince Fumo, the prince of South Philadelphia Democratic politics, and mayoral nominee John Street.

The three men met Monday at Fumo's office, and Fumo agreed to host an event for Street Sunday night at La Veranda, the swank restaurant that is a favorite Fumo haunt.

It wasn't the easiest of endorsements to seal, since Fumo was campaign chairman for defeated Democratic candidate Marty Weinberg, who savaged Street in his quest for the party nomination last spring.

Fumo brought his personal touch to the fight.

At a meeting of party workers in his home ward in April, Fumo told the troops that Street's election would be "a disaster for this city" and warned that their housing values would fall if Street became mayor.

"That's politics. People say things," Brady said yesterday. "It's a family squabble. I put pieces back together again. That's what I'm good at."

Weinberg endorsed Street early in the campaign. Asked if the men had discussed Fumo's harsh words in the primary, Street spokesman Ken Snyder said, "Things are said in the heat of battle and we understand that, but there's more as Democrats that unite us. Street and Fumo are leaders and part of leadership is coming together for the common good."

Fumo declined to discuss the endorsement yesterday, but his spokesman Gary Tuma confirmed it.

Tuma also said that Fumo was troubled by the fact that Howard Cain, a Democratic consultant and longtime Fumo associate, is working for Katz. Cain told the Daily News Monday that Fumo had been informed he was working for Katz and that he "didn't have a problem with it."

"Actually, he was upset," Tuma said yesterday. "He realizes there's nothing he can do about it, but he made it clear he's upset Howard worked in the primary for John White and for Katz now, and after the general election, he and Howard will have to sit down and discuss it."
