A recycling company named Elemental Inc. accepts everything from outmoded PCs to ancient mainframes for recycling.
Elemental deals with the materials in the PCs but sends monitors to a company that recycles the glass and lead, says Mark Szymanik, a partner in the firm.
Elemental will pick up large quantities of PCs. If you have only one, you'll have to take it there yourself. The company is at 2371 Church St., in Philadelphia's Frankford section. Phone: 215-289-1475.
Also check with your county or township. It may have a hazardous-materials disposal program that handles old computers.
Stan Pokras of Nonprofit Technology Resources says he will gladly take any machine anyone brings in, on the chance that it contains usable parts. Anything he can't use, he'll ship off to Elemental.
Nonprofit Technology Resources, which recycles computers and makes them available to low-income people through a hardware upgrade orientation class, can be reached at 215-564-6686.
